Summer Outings Programme 2017 ARCHIVE
Except for the end of season Dinner, the Tuesday meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but please assemble a little earlier at the indicated places. There's no limit on numbers but please car-share wherever possible as it often makes parking a little easier. Most evenings involves a walk (usually not more than 2 miles) with interesting photo- opportunities and finish no later than 9 o'clock with a trip to a local hostelry.
- Tuesday 16th May 7 pm: Rivelin Leader Peter Mason
Meet outside Rivelin Park Cafe at 7pm. This is half a mile up Rivelin Valley Road from Malin Bridge just past Hollis Lane. Lots of parking on the road. This will be a non-strenous walk up the Rivelin to see the mystery iron chair in the river and lots of industrial archaeology. It will be quite dark under the trees in the evening, so you might want a tripod to take any serious photos. An alternative, slightly more strenous walk is to go into the Catholic cemetery across the road and make your way up the steep hill into Walkley Cemetery, which is fairly overdrown and a bit spooky in the dusk.
Afterwards at the Hollybush Inn on Hollins Lane, a very short walk from where the cars are parked.
- Saturday 20th May Day Trip to Trentham Gardens
Pick up on Abbeydale Road bus stop by the junction with Dobcroft Road. Pick up at 8.00 return approx 18.00
- Tuesday 30th May Lumsdale Leader Roger Millican
Lumsdale is a unique Derbyshire dale, about one mile to the north of east Matlock. Beginning in the 17th century, the water power of Bentley Brook was used to power a series of mills down the dale. The remains of many of these still exist, as do two of the the three original mill ponds. The site has had much done on it in recent years and is now accessible by the paths and a number of steps. Good, strong shoes are recommended and for those wishing to be more adventurous, a treking pole or monopod would assist. The walk will be about two miles in total down the dale and then returning.
Meet at 7pm at the lower end of an unnamed road off A632, opposite Highfield School (DE4 5NA, GR312612). At the junction of the road with A632 is a sign “ Upper Lumsdale” on the right and a red post box in a stone pillar on the left. There should be plenty of car parking on the road.
Afterwards you can find the Duke of Wellington pub on the A632, towards Matlock, at the junction with Wellington Road (DE4 3GX GR303609).
- Tuesday 13th June 7 pm: Manor Lodge Leader: Linda Jackson.
Wildflower photography in and around the ruins of Manor Lodge. The wildflowers flowers have been planted by Pictorial Meadows a company who planted the London 2012 Olympic Games and they are continuing to develop different types of meadows around this site.
Meet at the Discovery Centre, 197 Manor Lane, S2 1UJ at 7pm. Free car park. There will be a charge of £3.00 for entry to the ruins. There will probably be enough for us to photograph in and around the Discovery Centre, but the site is much larger and you could walk down to the Farm and Cafe area.
