SUMMER OUTINGS PROGRAMME 2014 ARCHIVE

The Tuesday meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. but please assemble a little earlier at the indicated places. There's no limit on numbers but please car-share wherever possible as it often makes parking a little easier. Each evening involves a walk (usually not more than 2 miles) with interesting photo- opportunities and finishes no later than 9 o'clock with a trip to a local hostelry.

• Sunday 11th May at 2pm. Roche Abbey. Leader Linda Jackson
  Meet in the car park, Roche Abbey.  Situated on the A634 Maltby to Blythe road. Come and help recreate the very first photograph of Sheffield Photographic Society, captured in 1865, for our ‘Now and Then’ exhibition. Victorian costume NOT required.  There is parking for 15 cars near the Abbey but if this is full there is another car park a couple of minutes walk away. Please try to car share as much as possible.  We should assemble as a group and should get in free or with a group discount.  We are not allowed to take photographs for commercial use without paying a fee but English Heritage has offered to let us have free admission as this photograph is for a free public exhibition. You can also take as many photographs as you want for your own use.  The site closes at 5pm. Note: Your participation in the photograph is deemed to be your agreement to publication.

• Saturday 17th May 2014. Birmingham day trip. Leader Richard Hall (07849 262886)
  Assemble at St Peter’s at 8.00 for an 8.15am coach departure. Arrive in Birmingham city around 10.30. The day is available to explore Birmingham’s architecture, markets, canals and various places of interest. Leaving Birmingham about 5pm we should be back in Sheffield soon after 7pm.

• Tuesday 20th May at 7pm. Woolley Woods. Leader Richard Hall (07849 262886)
  This walk is planned to photograph bluebells, so the date could move to the week before or after to accommodate the bluebell season. Meet in the car park off Ecclesfield Road (B6082) 100m northwest of the junction with Fife Street. (SK 387921). A short easy walk in the woods. There are no good pubs nearby, so we’ll decide where we go on the night.

• Tuesday 3rd June at 7pm. Bamford Edge. Leader Frank Milner
  Walk up to Bamford Edge with views of the Derwent Valley and Ladybower Reservoir Some uphill walking so suitable footwear and clothing relative to the weather conditions required. A less strenuous alternative route may be available for those who prefer it. Meet at Heatherdene car park off the A6013 beside Ladybower Reservoir (SK 202859). In the Ladybower Inn for drinks after.

• Sunday 8th June. Midland Railway Centre. Leader Keith Allchin (07729 059468).
  A visit to the 1940s Home Front event. Travel in cars and arrange to meet at the event. See MRC website for details of the event. The MRC is located in Ripley (DE5 3QZ).

• Tuesday 10th June at 6.30pm. Summer Dinner. Leader John Ferretti (07929 875433)
  Booking essential via John. Payment in advance, partners welcome, come and enjoy a top quality meal at Castle College for a very reasonable price. Meet at the College, off Granville Road, S2 2RL.

• Tuesday 17th June at 7pm. Sheffield Waterside. Leader Richard Hall (07849 262886)
  Meet outside the Kelham Island Tavern on Russel Street (S3 8RW). On street parking is available there or in Alma St or Green Lane. We will explore parts of the ‘Upper Don Walk’, a short section of the ‘Five Weirs Walk’, the canal and canal basin. Opportunities to photograph water, weirs, bridges, canal boats, cityscapes and architecture. Meet up for a drink afterwards in the Kelham Island Tavern.

• Saturday 21st June. Blackpool day trip. Leader Richard Hall (07849 262886)
  Assemble at St Peter’s at 8.00 for an 8.15am coach departure. Arrive at Blackpool around 11.00. All day to enjoy the fun (and grot!?) of the seaside. Leaving Blackpool about 5.30pm we should be back in Sheffield soon after 8pm.

• Tuesday 1st July at 7pm. Magpie Mine. Leader Keith Allchin (07729 059468)
  Meet 7pm in Sheldon village outside the Cock and Pullet pub (SK175688). Roadside parking but the pub has a small car park. It would be advisable to share cars. Walk to Magpie Mine where there are some old mine buildings to photograph plus good views over the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately the old rusty tractor, which used to be there seems to have gone, presumably not under its own steam. A walk on field tracks and paths but be prepared to negotiate stiles and perhaps mud. The site is exposed so please wear suitable clothing. Return to Cock and Pullet pub, which is renowned for the number of clocks in the bar. Total walking distance 3km.

• Tuesday 15th July at 7pm. Upper Padley. Leader Stuart Davies (07754 853880)
  Meet at 7:00 pm at Grindleford Station Café (SK 251788) post code S32 2JA. A walk in Upper Padley visiting the remains of Padley Hall, part of Yarncliffe woods and Bole Hill Quarries. Looking at industrial and historical archaeology, wildlife and landscapes. Some uphill walking so suitable footwear and clothing relative to the weather conditions required, though nothing too strenuous. Plenty of free parking on the station approach road, which is just as you enter Grindleford, on the right, coming down from Fox House. We can retire to the Fox House afterwards for some liquid refreshment.

• Tuesday 29th July at 7pm. Sheffield Street Art. Leader Mike West (07508 201077)
  Meet at junction of Fitzwilliam Street and Devonshire Street (the top end of the Devonshire Green car park). Buses 51, 52, 70, 95, 120 West Street/Fitzwilliam Street bus stop. Street Art (not graffiti) is increasingly being commissioned by the building’s owners and is making some local artists world famous. This walk of about 1.5 miles through the city centre will view 20 sites. We will probably finish in the Lord Nelson pub in Arundel Street.

During the course of the next few months members may come up with information about 'open days', re-enactments, special events etc. which may well be of photographic interest to members. Watch this website and/or announcements at Society meetings.
